What is the role of the Governing Body?
The role of the Governing Body is to conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. This is facilitated by providing a strategic direction for the work and the improvement of the school, supporting, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the school and ensuring accountability for the standards achieved and the quality of education. This includes but is not limited to:
· Setting appropriate targets for pupil achievement in Key Stage 2
· Managing the schools’ budget including determining the staff complement
· Making sure that the curriculum for the school is balanced and broadly based
· Reporting National Curriculum assessments and examination results
· Appointing the headteacher and deputy headteacher, determining how the appointment of other staff will be managed and establishing procedures for management of staff conduct and discipline and staff grievances
· Establishing, following consultation with all staff, and reviewing annually a performance management policy for staff appraisal
· Managing governors’ duties to pupils with Special Educational Needs
· Drawing up an action plan after an inspection
Governing body make up
The Governing Body is made up of:
· Chair person (elected by the Governing Body)
· Vice Chair person (elected by the Governing Body)
· Parent Governors (parents (including carers) of registered pupils are eligible)
· Staff Governors (both teaching and support staff are eligible)
· Local Education Authority (LEA) Governors (appointed by the LEA)
· Community Governors (appointed by the governing body to represent community interests)
Committee Structure
Although the Governing Body regularly meets as a whole, work is also carried out in smaller committees. The make up of each committee is determined at the beginning of the academic year.
What do I do if I want to get involved?
Governors are elected for a set period of time so periodically vacancies do arise. If you are interested in becoming a Governor then please see the vacancies page then contact the Chair of Governors via the school office.
